Sightseeing in Thailand
There are many sightseeing attractions in the beautiful country of Thailand. To know more, it is a good idea to consult the Tourism Authority of Thailand either on the internet, or by phone or by walking into any of their offices. However there are certain places which should definitely not be missed when visiting Thailand. Read on to know more.
There are many historical sites to visit in Thailand. These sites would takes you back into the time of Thai history. Visit the Ancient City of Muang Boran which has a museum and reproductions of many popular monuments and temples. The jade green image of Buddha is respected all over Thailand. Located on the Maharaja Road in Bangkok, the Emerald Buddha should definitely not be missed. The famous Bridge on River Kwai located at Kanchanaburi should also be visited.
The Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun) located on Arun Amarin Road in Bangkok and the Temple of Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho) should be visited. The Buddha statue at Wat Pho is 145 feet long and 49 feet high. It is gold plated and the oldest learning centre in Thailand. It is conveniently located on Chetuphon Road in Bangkok.
If you want to learn more about the local culture, visit the Thailand Cultural Centre at the Ratchadaphisek Road in Bangkok. This centre is the hub for domestic and cultural exchanges. The Nao National Park is also a wonderful attraction where you can explore the beautiful waterfalls, caves and natural flora and fauna. The park is easily accessible from Phetchabun in North Thailand.
The Vimanmek Palace is a beautiful large building built out of golden teak. Located on the Rachivithi Road, it is easily accessible. The Phuket Orchid Garden and Thai Village will allow you to explore the lush green surroundings.
The Sukhothai Historical Park has the remains of the Royal Palace. Numerous temples, ponds and canals can be seen here. The Park is located in the province of Sukkothai in North Thailand. The Kamthieng House on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok is an ethnological museum where anthropology is widely studied.
If you are a museum lover, visit the Museum of Forensic Medicine where you would see bodies of murderers that have been preserved. The National Museum contains artefacts from the Neolithic age. Various guided tours are available and these tours are recommended. The third museum is the Prasat Museum in Bangkok which contains a private art collection.
Visit the Rose Garden Country Resort for some fun and relaxation. All day long, various local dance performances, music performances are carried out. You can see the ordination services of Buddhists as well as see work getting done by elephants. Also visit the Phuket Butterfly Garden and Aquarium to witness thousands of species of butterflies and fishes.
The Crocodile Farm and Zoo in Bangkok is the largest of its kind in the world. The Samphran Elephant Ground and Zoo is also a must visit for animal lovers. Hundreds of elephants along with several other animals reside here.
Finally the Ocean World Amusement Park on Beach Road in Bang Saen and Siam Park City in Bangkok should not be missed. The first park is a water oriented park and the other park is a combination of a theme park, water park and a fair.
Things to do in Thailand
Thailand has lots to offer. Some of the interesting outdoor activities that can be undertaken at Thailand include golf, rock climbing (cliffs of Krabi and Rai Leh), trekking (Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai), surfing (Phuket, Khao Lak and Koh Samui), scuba diving (Pattaya, Krabi, Similan Islands, Ko Tao and Ang Thong National Marine Park) and live - board diving.
Since 1990's, Thailand has also become a popular destination for top class luxury spas. Some of the best spas are present in Thailand today. These spas can be found in almost all the tourist destinations of Thailand which include Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Phuket, Hua Hin, Ko Samui and Pattaya.
Thailand has recently also become popular with travellers who visit the country especially to undergo medical treatments. The Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok attracts on average of 400,000 foreign patients every year. Other hospitals include Samitivej which specifically specializes in treating foreigners. Popular treatments, ranging from cosmetic surgeries, organ transplants, orthopaedic treatments, dental surgeries to cardiac surgeries are available here.
Shopping
Thailand is a shopper's paradise and many people visit Bangkok especially to just shop. Many tourists only spend hours in the countless markets and malls. Locally produced and cheap clothes, Thai silk and handicrafts are good buys in Thailand. Computer accessories and other electronic are also available in abundance but slightly more priced as compared to Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpar and Singapore. The night markets in Thailand are a Thai speciality.
The largest held in the country is at Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Vendors selling wares from designer items to handicraft items have stalls in these markets along with many open - air food courts. The Mahboonkrong (MBK) Mall in Bangkok is a good place to shop if you want some modern wear. The world's biggest weekend bazaar or 'The Chatuchak Weekend Market' sells a multitude of products ranging from clothes to antiques in an area which covers over 35 acres.
Bargaining in Thailand is common in all markets and road side vendor stalls. It is advised to first do a quick search of items in adjacent stalls to know the best price of the product. Many government run fixed price shops and hotel gift shops are also available.
